Inspired by the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, Avenue Q creates a puppet-filled world that is a little more reflective of the difficult, R-rated realities that we face when we learn that real life isn’t as simple as we dreamed it might be – but perhaps, suggests Avenue Q, life is all the more colourful and worthwhile for it
**Note: despite featuring puppets, Avenue Q features adult topics, language, and an onstage portrayal of puppet sex. Cast must be 18 or have parental permission to audition.**

That’s right, puppets!
Avenue Q provides a unique experience for all involved, whether they are performing as a puppet character or interacting with the puppet characters; it’s a true collaborative ensemble piece of FUN musical theatre.
Never worked with puppets? please don’t be scared or put off from auditioning, – we encourage all interested to audition.
The entire rehearsal process will be an exciting & supportive atmosphere for all involved!

CHARACTERS
The Avenue Q universe is an extremely heightened reality, resulting in most characters being quite over-the-top and surreal. Please take this into consideration when preparing for your audition.
PRINCETON – Puppet character
A fresh-faced kid just out of college looking for his purpose in life.
KATE MONSTER – Puppet character
A Kindergarten teaching assistant, a bit older than Princeton. Navigating her way through life in a world of Monsters & Humans.
GARY COLEMAN – Human character.
Yes, that Gary Coleman but now a superintendent of a building on Avenue Q. Traditionally, this role is played by a woman, but can also be played by a man.
BRIAN – Human character.
A laid-back guy married to Christmas Eve. Wannabe comedian, struggling to find work.
CHRISTMAS EVE – Human character.
An archetypal Asian immigrant who wants to be a therapist. Engaged to Brian. She is slightly controlling & demanding, with great comedic timing.
NICKY – Puppet character.
A bit of a slacker, who lives with Rod. Think Ernie from Sesame Street.
ROD – Puppet character
A Republican investment banker (resembles Bert from Sesame Street) who lives with Nicky. Rod is struggling with being gay and comes out over the course of the show.
TREKKIE MONSTER – 2 person Puppet character
1 role as Voice & Right hand + 1 roll as non-verbal Left hand –(Left hand will be trained as swing/understudy for other characters)
(Not to be confused with Cookie Monster, although the vocal resemblance is uncanny)- a monster who lives in the building on Avenue Q is very obsessed with using the internet for naughty things!
LUCY T. SLUT Puppet character.
A boa-wearing nightclub singer who likes to seduce young guys like Princeton
THE BAD IDEA BEARS – Puppet characters x 2 (Male or Female)
Two little bears who like to come out and convince good people to do bad bad things…in a snuggly way.
MRS. THISTLETWAT – Puppet character.
Ancient, cranky, and thistle-like. The Kindergarten teacher who Kate Monster works for.
Newcomer – Human character
New perspective tenant on Avenue Q – Appears at end of show (will also be trained as swing/understudy for other characters)
